- Ensure you have a working fire detector on every floor – test it every week.

- Don’t overload sockets. If too many appliances draw power from one socket it can overheat.
- Don’t run wires under carpets or rugs.
- Make sure all the persons making use of the premises know how to get out of the building quickly, taking into account various scenarios where a fire could prevent escape via normal routes.
- Make sure you know how to open locks on windows and doors in the event of an emergency and ensure that keys are readily available.
- Ensure that doors are closed at night, so that should a fire start it will be contained.
- Never leave lit candles unattended, and make sure that they are in appropriate candle holders that they cannot fall.
- Replace any cracked or frayed electric cords.
- If an appliance or electrical equipment starts smoking, or has an unusual smell, unplug it and have it seen to by a professional.
- Store matches and lighters well out of children’s reach.
- Pay special attention to the kitchen area because accidents that occur whilst cooking account for over half of all household fires. You should have a fire extinguisher or a fire blanket handy in the kitchen.
- A gas/smoke detector can be an important tool to help protect you from fire.
