Client:
MICAS – Malta International Contemporary Art Space
Location: Floriana, Malta
Sector: Arts & Culture | Heritage Protection
Overview
When heritage and modernity meet, protection becomes more than just a technical requirement — it becomes a cultural responsibility. Such was the case with MICAS, Malta’s flagship space for contemporary art. Housed within the historic bastions of Floriana, this national cultural venue required more than standard security infrastructure; it demanded solutions that respected its architectural integrity while safeguarding priceless works of art and ensuring the safety of all who step inside.
Alberta was honoured to be chosen as the trusted partner for this high-profile, high-sensitivity project — delivering a full suite of intelligent fire and security systems, adapted specifically for the needs of a heritage environment.
The Challenge
Protecting a historical site is never just about installing systems — it’s about understanding context.
The MICAS site, rich with Maltese stonework and heritage status, presented unique challenges:
- All installations had to be non-invasive and aesthetically discreet, maintaining the visual flow of both indoor and outdoor spaces.
- The venue would host international artworks, VIP events, and public education programmes — each with varying levels of risk and movement.
- As a public-facing national institution, the site needed to uphold high standards of visitor safety without compromising the artistic or architectural experience.
- Emergency preparedness was essential — but had to be deployed in a way that respected the building’s structural and historical constraints.
The Alberta Solution
Working closely with the MICAS team and heritage stakeholders, Alberta delivered a bespoke integrated system combining advanced technologies and minimalist design.
Here’s what the full solution included:
- 🔥 Fire Alarm System: A reliable, rapid-response fire detection system was installed throughout the premises. It ensures early warning in case of smoke or fire, giving staff and visitors time to evacuate safely, while enabling intervention before artworks or archives are threatened.
- 🎥 CCTV Surveillance: High-definition cameras were strategically positioned to provide maximum coverage of key areas — both indoor galleries and exterior public spaces — with minimal visual disruption.
- 🚨 Intruder Alarm System: Alberta installed a sophisticated intruder detection solution, capable of securing the venue during off-hours and alerting the MICAS team instantly in the event of any unauthorised access.
- 🛂 Access Control: Entry points were fitted with smart access control systems, granting different levels of access to staff, artists, curators, and contractors. These help manage flow without compromising security.
- 🧯 Fire Extinguishers: All fire extinguisher units were selected and installed in accordance with legal fire safety standards, while ensuring that placement blended naturally with the architecture.
Every piece of hardware, wire, and sensor was installed with precision, respecting the venue’s construction, heritage status, and future needs.
Outcome & Impact
The MICAS project is now a benchmark for how heritage and innovation can coexist. Thanks to Alberta’s work, the venue now enjoys:
- Full site security — without visual clutter or invasive infrastructure.
- Improved emergency readiness, fully compliant with local fire and safety regulations.
- Peace of mind for artists, curators, visitors, and public stakeholders.
Most importantly, MICAS can continue to grow as an international hub for artistic expression, safe in the knowledge that both people and artworks are well protected.
“This project was about balance — protecting a national treasure without disrupting its aesthetic or function. It was an honour to be part of the team who delivered a solution that not only meets high technical standards but also respects the soul of the site that not only meets high technical standards but also respects the soul of the site.”
